Cahill has been subjected to interest from several clubs abroad, but Melbourne have managed to convince him to come back to Australia league until the end of World Cup 2018. Australia national team manager Ange Postecoglou welcomed the decision by saying that it gives a huge boost to the national team as well. Cahill is one of the iconic Australian soccer players around. His presence in the country is expected to motivate a number of youngsters into the sport, which means good news for the national team.

It is also highly likely that Cahill may retire from football in his home country. The midfielder will be 38 by the time his current contract comes to an end. After having played non-stop football since 1998, the former Everton midfielder may consider hanging up his boots. There was a danger of Cahill becoming a brand ambassador for Chinese football rather than Australian football. The midfielder spent the last 16 months in Chinese football, which has been growing heavily following substantial investment from owners. Since leaving New York Red Bulls in 2015, Cahill went on to play for Shanghai Shenhua andHangzhou Greentown even though the total number of matches he experienced were quite low.

“It gives him another challenge in his career and knowing what he’s like, he won’t want to let people down here in Australia.I see no reason why he can’t have a massive impact. Having worked with him now, I know what motivates him, he’ll see this as a great challenge for himself and I’m sure he’ll make the most of it. He’s one of our greatest ever players, he’s still in the national team, he’s still great form and he’s still very ambitious. I think it’s a great move,” said Postecoglou.

HENRIQUE LEAVES BRISBANE ROAR IN MIDST OF FINANCIAL ISSUES

Brisbane Roar has had a lot of financial challenges for a while now, and a consortium is ready to buy the club.

The club’s cult hero Henrique has also decided to leave to join Malaysian Premier League side Negeri Sembilan. The Brazilian striker with 136 caps at the club was a regular in the three championship-winning sides with the Roar.

Henrique is the club’s second all time goal scorer with 39 goals including the winning goal against the Western Sydney Wanderers in the 2014 A-League grand final. He was grabbed a very important goal in extra-time in the 2011 grand final win over Central Coast.

As the move was announced, he said: “I just want to thank all the people at the club. The coaches, the players, staff and the fans for everything. We have done it together. It was a pleasure being part of the Brisbane Roar family.

“It’s one chapter on my life finishing and I will start another one. But one thing is for sure, I will never forget the memories we have created,” he added.

Roar’s Football Director Craig Moore on behalf of the club wished the player the best in his new adventure after thanking him for all his exploits at the club. He added that despite the situation at the club, they tried to retain him but he was keen on the move to get another challenge.

The sale of the club is subject to due diligence after the owner of energy comparison website Electricity Watch and former Adelaide United sponsor Clean Energy Enterprises submitted their bid to take over from the Bakries. On the other hand while that is ongoing, Bakrie’s family head has agreed to provide $2 million for the club to begin with plans for the coming season. The fund will be used to settle player and staff wages and avoid insolvency which would have meant a breach of the A-League licence, making the FFA take over.
