Australia international shot stopper Mat Ryan has signed for FC Copenhagen in the Danish top flight. The Australia national team star has put pen to paper on a two-year deal as a new FC Copenhagen. His move to Copenhagen was confirmed earlier this month.

Mat Ryan played for clubs such as Club Brugge in the Belgian league, Spanish team Valencia and the Premier League duo of Brighton & Hove Albion and Arsenal before he joined Real Sociedad in the Spanish La Liga last summer. The Australia international spent just one season at Real Sociedad before he left the club this summer in search of regular playing time with this year’s World Cup some months away. While he was at Real Sociedad last season, Ryan played second fiddle to undisputed first choice goalkeeper Alex Remiro as he was the second choice goalkeeper. He made nine appearances for Real Sociedad in all competitions last season.

Ryan wants more playing time to get him in good shape for the World Cup tournament in Qatar which starts in November. His quest for more playing time played a big role in his transfer to the Danish league. Ryan is the first choice goalkeeper for the Australian team who qualified for the World Cup tournament this year by beating Peru in the inter-continental playoffs. Australia are in Group D alongside France, Denmark and Tunisia.
Australia star Ryan has 73 caps for his country and he’s expected to be in goal when the World Cup tournament starts later this year. On FC Copenhagen, Ryan said in a club statement that they have a fantastic reputation across Europe when he was officially announced as their new player. Speaking further, he said the targets at FC Copenhagen are all about winning titles and competing in the biggest tournaments in Europe.
